Two Floral City women airlifted to Ocala after crash

A two-vehicle crash in Lecanto, early Friday afternoon, July 7, injured two Floral City women in one vehicle, while the driver and only passenger in the other vehicle received non-incapacitating injuries.

The crash occurred at 1:13 pm on SR 44 (W. Gulf to Lake Hwy.), about 250 feet east of S. Easy St. The crash report by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) stated there were three witnesses to the crash who were not involved in the crash.

According to the crash report, Diego Alberto Tabares-Gaviria, 55, of Hernando, was driving a 1988 Jeep Wrangler, pulling a small utility trailer with a load of gravel, traveling east on SR 44 in the outside lane. At the same time, Bobbi Jean Frisbie, 43, of Floral City, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer, also traveling east on SR 44, in the inside lane.

The report stated that Mr. Tabares-Gaviria, the driver of the Jeep, lost control of his vehicle when his trailer started to sway. The Jeep traveled into the eastbound, inside lane of SR 44, striking the right rear side of the Trailblazer with the left front of his Jeep.

After the impact, the Trailblazer rotated clockwise and overturned several times, across the eastbound lanes of SR 44. The Trailblazer came to rest upright, on the south shoulder of SR 44, facing west.

After the impact, the Jeep rotated clockwise and overturned onto the grass median of SR 44. When the Jeep overturned, the utility trailer it was towing became disconnected from his vehicle. The Jeep came to rest on the grass median, on its left side facing southeast, and the trailer came to rest, partly on the grass median and partly on the inside eastbound land of SR 44, facing northeast.

The crash report stated that all three passengers of the two vehicles were wearing a seatbelt/shoulder restraint, that Mr. Tabares-Gaviria’s injuries were “non-incapacitating,” and he was not transported for medical care. He was issued a citation for careless driving.

The two women were both transported by EMS to helicopters and airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala, FL with “incapacitating” injuries, according to the report, Bobbie Jean Frisbie via AirCare and Sydney Renee Frisbie via ShandsCare.
